Establishing Harmony through Principles of Design

THE SEVEN PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN IN INTERIOR DESIGN

In our last blog, we discussed emphasis in design, or how to create a focal point in your space. In this blog, we will be discussing how to establish harmony in design.
To do so, we must consider the seven principles of design in interior design that work together to create harmony.

Balance

Balance is established when everything has its place in a room, thus bringing visual calmness to the viewer’s eye. There are three types of balance in interior design: symmetrical balance, asymmetrical balance and radial balance.

Symmetrical Balance occurs when half of a room is replicated on the other side so that each side mirrors one another. This can be done by placing two of the same objects (wall sconces, picture frames, artwork, etc.) on either side of the center of the room.

Asymmetrical Balance levels out your furniture and décor items without reusing pieces.

Radial Balance involves setting similar items in the center of a space to carry the viewer’s attention in every direction. This can be done by incorporating a circular table in the dining room or a circular mirror above a sideboard.

Rhythm and Movement

Rhythm and movement work to create a relationship between design elements. In doing so, it carries the viewer’s eye from one side of the room to the other.

To create rhythm and movement in interior design, try to think of a few themes that you want to implement in your space. Repetition is a great way to establish rhythm and movement throughout the room.

Repetition

Repetition in interior design is the creation of a visual link and cohesiveness throughout the space. A single element used multiple times throughout a design is how repetition is born.

If you have preference for a metal color, paint color or floor samples, try to stick with those throughout the room to ensure everything is working together. Also, staying true to your chosen furniture style is pivotal for establishing rhythm in a room, as without a clear perspective the eye can wander and become overwhelmed.

Emphasis

Emphasis is the focal point of the space. Likewise, emphasis refers to a focal point and supportive furnishings that create the center of attention. This if often illustrated by a view, built-in structure like a fireplace or artwork.

Scale and Proportion

Scale refers to how an item relates to the size of a room or something else within the space. Measuring is key before you transition into the furnishing aspect of interior design, as the feeling of trying to make a large item fit a smaller room, or vice versa, makes the process even more stressful. Therefore, taking the necessary steps to ensure everything you accumulate for your space fits is key to perfecting the scale of your room.

Proportion conveys the shape of an item and how it relates to other elements in the room. Once you have found pieces you would like in your space, be sure to put them all together to make sure they coordinate and don’t overwhelm one another.

Contrast

Contrast incorporates two opposing objects alongside one another. This principle of design is important because it gives off an element of surprise. Think of a room where everything is the same color, shape and size. Boring, right?

Now, picture a room with like colors that suit one another but still give off their own unique look. It’s getting more fun, right? Once you add the larger elements into your space like the couch, bed, dining room table and accent chairs, then you can go in and add the little things that create contrast and establish your style in a coherent way.

Honorable Mentions:
White Space and Details

White Space in interior design is defined by the carefully selected blank spaces or open areas that allow for the design elements of a room to shine.

As you can imagine, details are an integral aspect of interior design. Once you’ve completed the outline of the space, then you can go in and add subtle pops of color, objects and memorabilia to add depth to the room.

Honorable Mention:
Harmony or Unity

Harmony and unity refer to the final product when the seven principles of design in interior design have worked together to form a unified front. Establishing harmony through the principles of design is the perfect way to ensure your space is displaying your style in the most organized way possible.
